John Belton Obituary

John Preston Belton, 81, of Stanley, passed away on Sunday, March 17, 2024, at Heritage Hall in Front Royal with his son by his side.

He was born on August 25, 1942, in Stanley and was a son of the late Frances Houser Belton. He was raised by his grandmother the late Lily Short Houser.

John was an alumnus of the 1960 graduating class of Stanley High School. After graduating, he proudly served his country in the United States Army. Upon completion of his service, he worked as a telecommunication technician with C&P Telephone Company in Washington, D.C. until his retirement.

On May 31, 1975, he married Maryellen Melvin Belton, who survives.

After his retirement John and his family moved back to Stanley, where he dedicated his time and service to the town and community he loved. He took pride in the years he volunteered with the Little League, serving the Town of Stanley as a member of the town council for over a decade, being a part of the effort to bring the William "Bill" Kibler Memorial Library to life as well as other worthy causes and organizations he held dear. John was a 30-year friend of Bill.

Surviving in addition to his wife are two daughters, Franessa Ortiz and Jotanya Belton, both of Richmond; a son, Billy Belton and wife Heather of Luray; and a granddaughter, Trinity Belton of Luray. He was preceded in death by a sister, Patricia A. Wessel.

A celebration of life will be planned for a later date.

Memorial contributions may be made to the William “Bill” Kibler Memorial Library, P.O. Box 129, Stanley, VA 22851.
