Matthew Mark Thurston, 63, of Stanley, passed away on Tuesday, June 2, 2026.
He was born on August 8, 1962, in Virginia and was a son of the late Wanda Brown.
Matthew had worked for Waynesboro Nursery Inc. and was a heavy equipment operator for Dupont.
He is survived by his wife of 32 years, Beatric Thurston; seven sons, Jason, Justin, Joshua and wife Samantha "Sam," Johnathan, Daniel and his wife Judas, T.J. and wife Heidi, and James; five daughters, Ashley, Rebekah "Deedee," Amber, Heather and Rebecca; two sisters, Tammy Wiseman and husband Richard, and Amanda Siron and husband Timmy; a brother, James Fisher; 13 grandchildren, Alyssa, Isaiah, Destiny, Jayden, Eli, Kenny, Ellie, Nova, Noah, Leotie, J.D., Azaleigh and Kaleb; and his childhood best friend, Michael "Mike" Haigh and wife Shelby. He was preceded in death by his nanny, Helen Miller; his aunt and uncle, Henrietta and Thomas Branch; a sister, Cheryl Phelps; his two best friends, Ronnie West and Kevin Good; and his stepson, Joseph "J.J."
A Celebration of Life will be held from 1-3 p.m. on Saturday, June 6, at the Thurston residence at 531 Hawksbill Dr., Stanley.
