John Ross Downing Mayne, 83, of Luray, Virginia, passed away on August 28, 2025 at his home.
John was born May 31, 1942, at King Edward VII Hospital in Paget Parish, Bermuda. His parents were the late Marguerite Louisa Mayne and John H. Mayne.
He was preceded in death by his sister, Julie Landers. He had one brother, Bill Mayne, whereabouts unknown.
John is survived by one son, Joshua Ross Mayne, whom he loved unconditionally. John was a grandfather to three grandchildren, Jenna, Zander, and Ian, whom he loved dearly. John had one daughter-in-law, Tiffany Mayne, mother to his grandchildren.
John attended Saltus Grammar School in Bermuda in his youth. John attended Augusta Military Academy from 1956 to 1960.
John moved to Atlanta, Georgia, in 1963, where he started work as an iron worker.
John worked at Williams Construction in Manassas, Virginia, where he finished his career in iron work.
John worked in the steel industry, where he started out as a welder, and he worked his way up to being a yard superintendent during his 20 years of service. John oversaw getting bridges and high-rise buildings constructed. John had four falls while working in the steel industry. After his last fall, John retired as he had sustained serious injuries.
John moved to Luray, Virginia, in 1979, where he built a log house.
John worked at Wrangler in Luray, Virginia, for 11 years as a mechanic until the business closed.
John sold his log house and built his final home in Luray, Virginia, in the early 2000's.
John enjoyed watching westerns and listening to music from his childhood. He always believed in working hard for everything that he had in life. He enjoyed spending time with his son and his grandchildren.
The family will hold a private celebration of life.
