Christine (Alger) Campbell

Christine Alger Campbell of Luray, Virginia passed from this earth and went home to be with her Lord on May 1, 2020.  She was born on September 11, 1936 in Covington, Virginia to Jacob Landon Alger and O’Della Virginia (Martin) Alger, both of which have preceded her in death.  She had an older brother, Jacob “Gene” Alger who has also preceded her in death.  As a young child, her family moved to Rileyville, Virginia, where her father worked for the railroad and her mother managed their country store, located in the lower level of their home on Route 340.

Christine attended Luray High School, where she met Emmett C. Campbell, Jr., who she married on March 17, 1956.  They settled into an apartment in Luray, close to her employment at the Page County Treasurer’s office. In the early 1970’s she opened her own tax/book-keeping business in Luray, which she retired from in 1990.  Christine was a devoted mother and grandmother, always available whenever she was needed.

Christine was an active member of the Rileyville Baptist Church from childhood, until her death. Over the years, she participated on committees, helped with hospitality events, taught Sunday school for both adults and children, and enjoyed being a part of the choir alongside her husband, Emmett.

Christine had the gift of hospitality, especially from the kitchen. Anyone who knew her, knew how much she enjoyed cooking and feeding family, friends, and anyone in need.  Her children and grandchildren were always welcome to join her in the kitchen and were blessed from the experience of learning the art of cooking (hospitality) alongside her.

Christine is survived by her husband, Emmett, of Luray; a daughter and son-in-law, Vicki and Darrell Burner, of Woodstock, VA; a son and daughter-in-law, Keith and Elizabeth Campbell, of Luray; 5 grandchildren; Brandon Campbell of Luray, Sarah Salyard of Edinburg, Emily DeBenedetto of Luray, Daniel Losnes of Lynchburg, Rachel Campbell of Luray; 9 grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, and in honoring Christine’s lifelong mission of hospitality, contributions can be made to the Page One Food Pantry in Luray https://www.vapageone.org/ , or the J.O.Y Club, Rileyville Baptist Church https://www.rbcva.org/.  The J.O.Y. (Just Older Youth) Club is a ministry that hosts a meal, and a time of fellowship, for seniors in the community, twice a month. Christine’s husband, Emmett, is currently a volunteer for this ministry.

Due to current restrictions, Christine’s family has arranged to privately witness her interment, however, a memorial service will be held on a later date at Rileyville Baptist Church, 7044 US Highway 340N, Rileyville, Virginia.
