James Elmer Dovel, 86, of Stanley, died on Tuesday, June 18, 2019, at the University of Virginia Medical Center.
He was born on Oct. 11, 1932, in Stanley and was a son of the late Elmer Rosser Dovel and Ruby Agnes Leake Dovel.
Mr. Dovel was a veteran of the United States Army, having served in the Korean War. He retired from Eastern Airlines as a supervisor, with more than 30 years of service. He attended the Leake's Chapel Church of the Brethren.
Surviving in addition to his wife, Shirley Hackley Dovel, are a brother, Denver Dovel of Stanley; a sister, Regatta Gochenour of Stanley; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Allene Dovel and Peggy Loy.
A funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Saturday, June 22, at the Leake's Chapel Church of the Brethren in Stanley by Pastor Ken Dolan, Pastor Andy Seastrom and Pastor Duane Painter. Burial will be in the Leake's Chapel Cemetery, with military honors by the VFW Comer-Jones Post 621.
The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. on Friday, June 21, at the church.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Stanley Volunteer Fire Department or to the Leake's Chapel Church of the Brethren.
